Where can I find Purple Martin house plans and how to attract them? I'm in the panhandle of Florida near St. Andrews Bay.
Martins like little houses, but high, and they like mosquitoes! I saw many houses that are Martin House made from gourds, the opening is about 1 cm wide. Sometimes they are painted. Sometimes they are natural. Hang them on a line approximately 12 feet high with an active area of mosquitoes and wait for birds to move
If you build it they will come!
Rain
Go to a more food shops, a ranch and farm supplies, large nursery etc. .... Tractor Supply .. etc. ...
Just put the house Martin installed as instructed and wait for them to move ...
Birds and Flowers magazine archives I guess! Also, your nearest store closes .... Enjoy!
Try Yahoo search type in the home of Martin and to see what you get.
I am gourds. they seem to work best if they are painted white, but you can leave them their natural color. Make sure the hole is approximately 1 inch in diameter, no bigger than 1 1 / 2 inches. Hope this helps
Hi Neighbor!
Here in the Pensacola area, there were a lot of Purple Martins before hurricanes Ivan and Dennis. I have seen a return but the few houses that were here have been damaged and have not been repaired. I hope to put up a couple of houses once I get the rest of the tree stumps removed, lost four great oaks. Now, there will be space flight for the Martins well. Anyway here is an excellent link for information.
You will need Adobe Reader 7.0 or better, but the info is great.
