Hey there
While making a house you need to take some key decisions. Firstly, how many birds do you have? Barns are of different sizes and are specially designed for number of birds. A commonly accepted rule is that you must provide atleast four square feet of space per bird MINIMUM! More is always better, but this property must be provided for the birds to move freely.

Regarding the materials, you really need to decide what kind of cooperation you want. If you like birds 2 or 4, then a chicken tractor around 16-20 square feet is enough and everything you need to do is a lumber and chicken wire. The wheels are also a good addition because you can drag a tractor in your backyard.

If you have more than 6 birds, then you'd better settle for a medium to large Coop offering more than 30-40 square feet of space. For the manufacture of one, you'll need wire, sheets of plywood, poultry feeders, and straw out of wood and wire. Remember, too, since they keep confined inside the chicken for long periods, you must provide sawdust or sand that chicken like taking sand baths.

Another important thing to consider is that you insulating Coop. You should try to find a good balance between insulation and ventilation. It will also depend on where you live. Wood, anti-foam, fiberglass and loose insulation (Cellulose Insulation) are some popular methods of insulation.

Do check out my page on barns http://www.squidoo.com/chickencoopdesign I discussed many things with regard to poultry here.
