The term "Sun Belt" has become synonymous with the southern third of the nation in the early 1970s. There was a change in this period of the first economically and politically significant north-east to south and west. Events such as the mass migration of foreign workers from neighboring countries of Mexico, a warmer climate and a boom in agriculture has enabled the southern third of the United States to grow by leaps and bounds economically. The climate has spurred growth not only agricultural but also a haven for many retirees who created retirement communities in places like Florida and Arizona.

Industries such as aerospace, defense and oil exploded in companies like Sun Belt has benefited from the low involvement of unions in the south and enjoys proximity to several U.S. military installations, which were the main consumers of their products. The oil industry helped propel many southern states like Texas and Louisiana before and tourism has exploded in Florida and Southern California.

Since 1970, the Sun Belt states have gained 25 electoral votes, many of whom have been displaced by the north-eastern states and the Midwest. Since the election of Lyndon B. Johnson 1964, all elected U.S. President, except Obama of Illinois, was the Sun Belt (Gerald Ford, who was of Michigan, has been president after the resignation of Richard Nixon, but was not elected as president and lost against Georgia, Jimmy Carter in the 1976 election.)
