Chicken Pen Plans - 4 Important considerations when building a barn If you plan to build a house and you are not sure what you need to incorporate, there are some essential features of any good deals barn that you should look out for before you begin. Here are four important points to consider.
1. The dimensions of the enclosure of chicken
This is particularly important. happy hens produce larger quantities of good quality eggs and it was proved that the chickens are kept in cramped conditions will not pose as well as those who have the space and, eventually, a certain freedom. You should allow 3-5 square feet of space inside the closed sleeping / nesting area and, ideally, 15 square feet of space per bird in the Run box. However, this can be reduced if the chickens must be allowed to free range a bit for a few times a week. In terms of height, there should be enough room for them to jump as well as the chickens do not fly, they like to flip. A minimum of 3 feet should be allowed, but the more the better.
2. Weather
Because chickens are outdoors and animals will be outside in most weather conditions, is an important factor to consider. Good barn plans incorporate various forms of waterproofing. It is important when building a house to make sure the waterproof material is used for the roof of sleeping / nesting area. In addition, you will want to ensure that this area has gates holes pop / which may be closed at night or during periods of particularly bad weather conditions. Some people also like to provide temporary coverage for the race (such as tarps heavy duty polyethylene) insist that some chickens to be outside, despite heavy rains. It is a characteristic of ex-battery hens in particular who are not familiar with the habits of normal fowl!
3. Protection against predators
Lots of chicken-keeping have been devastated by the loss of their chickens to a fox or raccoon, and keep your pet feather proof should be a major consideration. You must therefore ensure that all the plans you are considering state specifically what features are integrated to fight against this problem. Predators are very clever and sometimes go to extremes to get to your chickens. It is therefore essential to ensuring that all materials used were sufficiently robust to withstand determined to bite, and it includes a single mesh for the tracks. In addition, the foxes are known to sink into a house, so you should look for plans that offer options for the protection of this aspect. For example, you may be the baseline of a net, or consider driving stakes into the ground around the pen.
4. Cleanability
While you may be surprised by the amount of waste that can produce a few small hens, there is no reason that the pen can not be held hygiene! Look for features in the henhouse plans such as multiple access points, such as front and rear doors in the bedroom, so you can easily scoop out the waste. In addition, there should be advice on sealing cracks and crevices to prevent the infestation of red mites. Another useful feature is top handles, to enable cooperation to be moved in the garden because it gives the opportunity not only to allow your land to recover, but to collect waste that can so rotten, be used as garden fertilizer.
As holder of chicken and chicken houses retailer myself, I was looking for ideas to incorporate into my own designs, which lead me to a book written by Bill Keene, a fellow chicken lover ! His designs were so simple that they were almost as easy to build as mine cooperative self-assembly has been put together! Since I recommended the book to many clients seeking to build a house themselves, and all were delighted by both simplicity.
