History

Micron was founded in Boise, Idaho, in 1978 Ward Parkinson, Joe Parkinson, Dennis Wilson, and Doug Pitman. Seed funding was provided by local businessmen Idaho Tom Nicholson, Noble Allen, and Ron Yanke. Later, he received funding from the Idaho billionaire JR Simplot, whose fortune was made in the area of potato. In 1981, its first manufacturing unit of platelets (Fab 1) was completed and the production of DRAM chips Micron was 64K. A second "Fab" was completed in late 1984 to produce DRAM 256K. By focusing on being a low cost producer, Micron has survived the collapse of many in the DRAM market has caused many competitors to leave the area. One of the most vicious was in 1985 when allegations of dumping Japanese import prices fueled a collapse that caused the inventor to leave Intel DRAM market. Micron has survived and eventually acquired the operations of the memory of his rivals Texas Instruments and Toshiba in 1998 in 2001. These acquisitions have Micron international presence with production facilities in Italy, Singapore and Japan. Today, Micron is the only manufacturer of DRAM in the United States and its main competitors are Samsung, Hynix, Elpida and. In 1994, founder Joe Parkinson retired as CEO and was replaced by current CEO Steve Appleton.

In the early 1990s the company formed Micron Computers (later known as Micron Electronics) for the manufacture of PCs. The subsidiary was founded in the vicinity of Nampa, Idaho, and sold under the brand names of Micron Computer, and, later, MicronPC & MicronPC.com.

In 1998, Micron Technology has acquired Rendition, a manufacturer of 3D graphics chips.

Control of Internet activities of Micron Technology, Micron Internet Services, has been transferred to Micron Electronics in 1999. Micron Electronics has taken a new direction - combination of computers and Internet services. Controversy EMI CEO Joel Koecher Internet firm bought HostPro (Web.com), he merged the company.

In 2001, the computer-making and the Internet have been shared. The assets of the Internet have been merged with Interland Inc., which changed its name to web.com, and all the links of Micron Technology were cut. Computer operations decisions have been sold to Gores Technology Group, which later renamed the brand name MicronPC to "MPC Computers." MPC Computers belonging to the MPC Corporation (formerly HyperSpace Communications, Inc.) operated from nearby Nampa , ID. MPC declared bankruptcy in November 2008 and ceased operations.

In 2002, armed with the Sherman Antitrust Act, the U.S. Department of Justice began an investigation into the activities of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) manufacturers. U.S. computer makers, including Dell and Gateway, argued that DRAM prices inflated causing the loss of profits and hindering their effectiveness on the market. To date, five manufacturers have pleaded guilty to their involvement in an international conspiracy to fix prices, including Hynix, Infineon, Micron Technology, Samsung, Elpida and. Micron Technology has not been fined for his participation because of cooperation with investigators.

In June 2007, Steve Appleton has given the title of President COO Mark Durcan.

In March 2008, Micron has launched Aptina Imaging, a CMOS Image Sensor Division. Aptina Imaging was sold and became an independent private July 2009.

On 9 October 2008, Micron announced a restructuring of its memory operations, with plans to reduce its global workforce by about 15 percent. Most of the layoffs have been targeted for its headquarters in Boise, because of the elimination of a contract to supply NAND-memory. On October 12, the company announced the purchase of the Inotera to Qimonda's technology for 400 million dollars.

On February 23, 2009, Micron announced it would phase out the 200 mm wafer production operations at its plant in Boise, with the loss of a supplement of 2000 jo.
