Acadian Style House Plans

Acadian Style House PlansHello From Nova Scotia - Part 16 - The town of Lunenburg - A World Heritage Site by Unesco

A delightful rest at the Lunenburg Inn after a very compressed and hectic day yesterday along the Lighthouse Trail got ready for another day of adventures. At about 7:30 I made my downstairs in anticipation of a hearty breakfast. Indeed, freshly baked muffin morning glory was used to quench my immediate hunger. I had two breakfasts to choose from: a hot breakfast featuring poached eggs with bacon or turkey bacon, or a cold breakfast featuring a choice of two elements of any cereal with fruit / fat-free yogurt / bread Fresh with jam or stewed rhubarb. I opted for the cereal with fresh fruit and rhubarb which was delicious. The breakfast at the Lunenburg Inn was so generous that I could not even finish my entire portion. Appropriate strengthened I was now ready for a day full of discoveries.

At about 8:30 I made my way up in the town of Lunenburg, a very charming and picturesque settlement which houses approximately 2,500 full-time residents and many thousands more during the tourist season. Lunenburg is one of the destinations in Nova Scotia Travel favorite, and for good reasons. In 1995, Lunenburg was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in recognition of its unique architecture and civic design because it represents one of the best preserved examples of a planned British colonial settlement in North America.

The city was founded in 1753 and earlier inhabitants included the Mi'kmaq Aboriginal and Acadian settlers. Lunenburg was named in honor of the Duke of Brunswick-Lunenburg became the king of England in 1727. The settlers brought in by the British Crown were known as the Foreign Protestants, mainly farmers who had been recruited from areas in southern and central Germany, Switzerland and France. They were deliberately chosen for their loyalty to the British Crown potential. Over the years this farming community turned into a successful seaport and shipbuilding center, and even today, High Liner Foods still has a fish processing plan in town.

I walked towards the waterfront on Bluenose Drive, an early autumn morning, bright, not a cloud in the sky. Several restaurants and inns line the street on the north side, and the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic which houses the popular Old Fish Factory restaurant is located on the south side of the street. The town stretches of water on a steep hill with long streets, east to west, and shorter routes linking to the top of the crest of the hill.

It was a quiet morning on Friday, and residents and tourists were still lying low. While walking on the hill, I started to see shop-owners who have opened their doors and put their goods for sale. Lunenburg has a myriad of antique shops, galleries and small craft shops, and most houses in repair quality and colorful paintings.

The city stands out as a unified blink covered houses and the local historic architecture includes a charming range of styles including the Cape Cod style, neo-Classical or Georgian homes, a Scottish-style that includes five-sided dormers Scottish neo- Gothic, Second Empire and Queen Anne styles rebirth. A typical feature of Lunenburg architecture is the "Lunenburg Bump" which has a skylight protruding Scotland, also called the hump.

Lunenburg is an extremely charming city. The center of the city is located near St. John's Anglican Church, the most famous ecclesiastical structure of the city. This church was built in 1754 and 1870 to 1875 gothicized. Recently, the Halloween night in 2001, the church was gutted by a spectacular fire in mysterious circumstances. The community is shocked, but they raised money and the church was rebuilt in its entirety.

Furt.
